Not Folk Dance

  • Performed by members of a group as part of their cultural expression.
  • Cultural insiders do not consider the movement dance.
  • Cultural insiders understand what the movements mean.
  • Cultural outsiders may or may not understand the meaning of the movements.
  • Has certain required movements, but allows for innovation.
  • Has rhythmic movements learned from others in the group by watching and imitating.
  • May or may not be performed to music.


Examples


  • Stylized walk in jazz funerals (to a dirge on the way to the church)
  • Easter Rock movements in church
  • Swaying and clapping of gospel choirs
  • Sports fans' movements, often in response to school band or cheerleaders
