  3. Write about your photograph or object on the back of this sheet or in your Journal.

    1. Describe the photo/object. Questions to consider are: Who is in it? What is in it? What is the time period? What's happening?

    2. Write about the significance of the photo/object to you. Consider: Why is it important to you? Why did you choose this one to bring to class? Would an outsider understand why it is meaningful to you?

Part 2 -- Your Partner's Turn

  1. Trade photographs or objects with your partner.

  2. Look at your partner's photo/object and analyze it without talking to your partner. Use the questions you answered about your own photo/object to make observations about your partner's photo. Write your observations on the Photo Clues sheet in the left-hand column.

  3. Write three questions about the photo/object that you can't already answer. Write these questions in the left-hand column of the Photo Clues sheet.

  4. Interview your partner by asking these three questions. As he or she talks, write down keywords and ideas that seem important in the right-hand column of the Photo Clues sheet.

  5. After 5 minutes, switch roles. Now the interviewer becomes the interviewee. Repeat Step 6.

  6. After you both have completed the interviews, discuss what you learned from one another. Are there things your partner observed about your photo/object that you had never noticed before? Are there stories behind the photo/object that go beneath the surface of the image? Do you have a special perspective on your photo/object that gives it meaning. What does this tell you about being an insider or an outsider?
