Technology can be used in an exciting way to make a map that has pictures found on the Internet. The directions below will show you how to import and paste those images onto a map then print it on several pages, which are then pasted together to make a large wall map.
Directions:
1. In AppleWorks, create a new Drawing document.
2. In Netscape or other browser program, access Louisiana State Map with Parishes. Copy the map of Louisiana by clicking on it and holding until a menu appears (Right click for PCs). Select "Copy image" from the menu. A copy of the map will be saved to your clipboard.
3. Go back to the Drawing document.
4. From the Format menu, choose Document. In the Document dialog box, type the number of pages you want across and down in the Size, i.e. enter in the "Size" box, Pages across - 6, Pages Down - 4, for a graphic that will print out on 24 pages.
5. To view all the pages, choose Page View from the Window menu. Click the "small mountain" picture in the lower left corner of the document repeatedly until your view is reduced enough to see all the pages.
6. Paste the map in the Drawing document. While the graphic is still active, drag it across to cover all your pages.
7. If the drawing tools are not in view, select Show Tools from the Window menu. Select the 6 point or 8 point width line from the Pen Pallet and the Line or Freehand tool from the Drawing Tools Pallet. (Select Show Balloons in the Help menu to help you find these tools). Use the drawing tool to draw lines that separate the three cultural regions.
8. Click the "large mountain" in the lower left corner of the document repeatedly until the map covers the whole screen. Continue clicking until the portion of the map that fits on one page fills the screen. This will give a view of only one or two parishes on which pictures pertaining to those parishes can be pasted.
9. Copy images from the Creole State Exhibit or other sites and paste them in the correct regions of the map. Save the map after adding the graphics.
10. Print the map on a color printer and glue the pages together to make a large map that can be posted on the wall.
